Be Menopositive! provides an opportunity for women and men to meet in a fun, relaxed environment to gather information about menopause, to see 'the big picture' and to help proactively plan their future health.

Because the body undergoes complex physical and hormonal changes, it's not surprising that family doctors and pharmacists are often the first professional resource women turn to for help when they begin to experience the better known signs and symptoms of menopause, including hot flashes, fatigue and mood swings. These busy professionals, however, may not have more than a few minutes to talk about treatments, provide alternatives or even to answer questions. Sometimes the information offered may be vague or, even worse, outdated.

More and more, women and their families are looking to Be Menopositive! for answers. According to Dr. Larry Komer and his wife, Joan, who co-created and present the series, Be Menopositive! is more than an information session, it's a state of mind, which comes from making informed choices. It's an opportunity to help a woman decide what is best for her.

The Agenda


Unlike other seminars which concentrate on just the physical aspect of menopause, Be Menopositive! has a dual focus, explaining about the significant emotional and psychological issues as well as the physical ones. The two-and-a-half hour seminar offers a wide range of topics designed to provide accurate and up-to-date answers to the questions women want and need to know concerning their health. Subjects include the psychological and emotional issues of menopause; the latest in medical research; methods of treatment, including vitamin therapies and natural products; and even strategies for men in their quest for a healthy future.

Joan Komer begins the presentation using humor and an interactive approach to focus on self-esteem issues and emotional stumbling blocks in mid-life. Practical tips are shared that can help a woman personally, or within her family, to enhance her quality of life.

Following a short break, Dr. Larry Komer provides in-depth and valuable information about physical symptoms, long-term implications, and the varied approaches to healthcare that are available during the years following the onset of menopause. One example he cites is the fact that although heart disease is the leading cause of death among women, most are not aware about the long-term benefits of treatment on heart disease and prevention of osteoporosis, or that they can even be protected from some forms of cancer.

Questions are encouraged at the end of the presentations and men are particularly welcome. The single most important factor to help women through the menopause phase is the support of their mate.

To date, more than 24,000 people have attended the seminars. 

 

All proceeds from the $5.00 admission charge are donated by the Komers to a local women's shelter, in keeping with their care and concern for women's issues.
